Career Paths Chart

Work on Goal Setting with a New Technical Writer

New technical writers often have a lot of new information they have to learn when they start a job. After the initial training program, which lasts 3 to 6 weeks at my company depending on what they need to learn, they have a few months to practice what they learned. Then, I like to sit down with new technical writers in my group and talk about their goals. I start by assessing what they most like about their job and what type of role they would like to have in a year. Sometimes we even discuss what type of role they would like in three years, if they have an idea.

We use the career path chart as a guide. We also talk about the extracurricular activities they want to be involved in, including brown bag presentations, recruiting, Robolab, and more. These extracurricular activities all help to build strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.

Relax at a Deck Party

After I finish up my projects for the week, I go relax at the deck party.
